The Mold Process
Silicone Rubber Mold
The artists original is first fully documented in pictures so our team in the foundry has a clear understanding of what they are duplicating. The mold captures every detail put into the original work and is one of the most critical phases in the bronze process. The mold is used to create duplicates of the original design and allows an artist to create editions of their work. The mold is a perfect negative of the artists original work.
Our mold material is silicone rubber and can often last for many wax castings if desired, but, we also provide molds designed to have only one wax pulled from them - a “one off” casting is used mainly for monumental or commissioned works. Most of our molds are backed with a plaster mother mold reinforced with hemp as silicone rubber is very flexible.
Molds are designed so we can split them at strategic points called seams. The seam lines are keyed into the silicone rubber and into the plaster mother mold to maintain the best registration possible. The original sculpture is returned to the artist once the mold is complete.
